Lagos State government has issued a fresh alert to residents of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, and the coastal areas like Badagry and Epe to be cautious of flood due to backflow arising from high tide of the Lagos lagoon in recent times.

The state commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, made this known in a statement on Monday.

Bello stressed that the high tide of the Lagos lagoon has made it difficult for various channels to discharge effectively into the lagoon.

He said, “The high tide of the Lagos lagoon has made it difficult for storm run-off from the various channels to discharge effectively into the lagoon which may cause stagnation into the streets and major roads until the level of the lagoon subsides to allow for a discharge of the channels.”

The state had last week issued flood advisory to people living on the banks of the Ogun River, including residents of Mile 12, Agiliti, Ketu, Alapere, Agric, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Kara, Isheri Olowora, Araromi, Otun Orisha community, Maidan, Odo Ogun, Owode Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, Agboyi II and Agboyi III.

Flood has ravaged many parts of Nigeria, leading to death of over 600 people, displacement of over 2 million, as indicated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Observers say it is the worst disaster in at least the last 10 years.
